ReflectionWhile completing my experience at Cincinnati Children’s, I took away many applicable skills that can be carried over into other possible research opportunities. I learned, with the great help of my mentor, Yoshi Odaka, the skills of DNA genotyping, slide mounting, and microscope imaging. I learned that the hands-on interaction with live tissue is what interests me. As a nursing major, this has piqued my interest in the surgical arena, which I plan to further investigate before choosing a concentration within nursing. I am thankful for the chance to see the type of science that takes place in this environment. I have refined my abilities to be able to work independently and set my own schedule to complete tasks. I have not decided whether or not I wish to continue research in my life as a career option. Regardless of what my future decisions entail, I greatly value this experience as something unique that I couldn’t have done without the help of the honors program. The biggest take-away that I have is the ability to understand a concept that is so microscopic on such a reasonable scale. To take an aspect of life that cannot be seen by the human eye, but with intervention, can be understood by the human brain is so astonishing to me.
